The coming 5G networks globally will be featuring some terrific augmented reality apps, if Niantic’s alliance of telecom companies has anything to say about it. Privately-held Niantic is headquartered in San Francisco, first established in 2010.
Niantic, and a blue-chip group of major telecommunications companies, has formed an alliance to create and deploy 5G-ready augmented reality content for mobile users worldwide. Niantic is the creator behind the hit A/R game “Pokémon Go.” Initial alliance members include Verizon, Deutsche Telekom, EE, Globe, Orange, SK Telecton, Softbank and Telus. With 5G, download speeds for such A/R apps may be has much as 10 times faster than with 4G.
